Apply for an Australia eVisitor

The eVisitor is the free Australian visa for citizens of 36 eligible European countries travelling for tourism, to visit family or friends, or for business visitor activities. It is granted digitally and linked to your passport, so there is nothing to print and no stamp to collect.

1.Complete the application form
2.Confirm details & pay the service fee
3.Receive your eVisitor approval by email

Do I Need an eVisitor?

Three common situations. Find the one that matches your travel before continuing.

You are visiting for tourism, business, or a short trip

If you are a citizen of one of the 36 eligible European countries and hold a passport from that country, you need an eVisitor. The Australian Government charges nothing for it, and it allows a stay of up to 3 months on each entry.

You plan to work, study or settle in Australia

The eVisitor is not a work visa. It does not permit paid work for an Australian employer, study of more than 3 months, or residency. You must obtain the appropriate work or student visa before departure.

You are an Australian or New Zealand citizen

You are exempt from this process. Australian citizens do not need a visa, and New Zealand citizens receive theirs automatically on arrival.

No eVisitor required

Eligible Nationalities

These are the official eVisitor eligibility criteria for citizens of the eligible European countries listed below. Eligibility is reviewed periodically, so please confirm your country's status on the official government website before applying.

Eligible Countries for the Australia eVisitor
Eligibility Criteria

An applicant is likely eligible for the eVisitor if:

  • ✓They hold an eligible passport: they must be a citizen of one of the listed countries and hold a valid passport from that country.
  • ✓They meet the health requirement. Anyone who has previously failed it should apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) instead.
  • ✓They meet the character requirement. A criminal conviction in any country means applying for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) instead.
  • ✓They have paid their debts to the Australian Government: they, or any family members, must have repaid or arranged to repay them.
  • ✓They are a genuine visitor: they intend only to stay temporarily and will obey their visa conditions and stay period.
  • ✓They have enough money to support themselves in Australia and to leave at the end of their stay.
  • ✓The visa is in the best interests of the child: it may not be granted to an applicant under 18 if it is not.

The eVisitor is not required if:

  • ✕The applicant holds Australian citizenship.
  • ✕The applicant already holds a valid Australian visa.
  • ✕The applicant is a New Zealand citizen: a Special Category Visa is issued automatically on arrival.

Travelling to Australia

The following information is provided for general guidance to citizens of eligible countries who intend to travel to Australia on an eVisitor. It does not constitute legal advice. Applicants are advised to consult the Department of Home Affairs for authoritative guidance.

Permitted Activities Under the eVisitor

The eVisitor authorises short visits to Australia for the following activities:

  • Tourism, holidays, and visits to family or friends
  • Business visitor activities such as meetings, conferences, trade fairs, and contract negotiations, none of which may amount to employment in Australia
  • Joining or travelling on a cruise
  • Study or training of up to 3 months in total

The eVisitor is not a work visa. You cannot perform paid work for an Australian employer or sell goods or services directly to the public. Travellers planning to work, or to study for longer than 3 months, must obtain the appropriate visa prior to departure.

Documents Required on Arrival

Australian Border Force officers reserve the right to request supporting documentation at all ports of entry. To keep your arrival straightforward, it is highly recommended to carry:

  1. Evidence of accommodation arrangements (hotel booking, address of host, or similar).
  2. A return or onward travel ticket, where applicable.
  3. Evidence of sufficient funds to support the visit without recourse to public funds.
  4. Where the purpose of travel is business, an invitation letter from the host organisation.
Important: As with any international travel, an approved eVisitor allows you to travel to Australia, while final entry is granted by the Australian Border Force at your point of arrival. Carry the supporting documents so officers can see that you meet your visit's conditions.

Health Provisions for Visitors

Australia's public healthcare system (Medicare) does not extend to short-term visitors. Because any medical costs incurred during your stay will be your responsibility, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel and medical insurance before departure. Insurance is recommended rather than required for the eVisitor.

Some countries hold Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with Australia that cover limited, medically necessary treatment; however, these agreements do not replace travel insurance and do not cover repatriation, ambulance transport, or treatment for pre-existing conditions.

Customs and Prohibited Goods

Australia enforces strict biosecurity and customs regulations to protect its environment. Upon arrival, you must declare any food, plant material, animal products, or items that have been in contact with soil or freshwater. For detailed and up-to-date guidelines, please refer to the official Australian Border Force website.

Climatic Conditions

Australia spans several climate zones, with conditions that differ markedly by region and season:

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): High temperatures across most of the continent, with extreme heat inland and tropical conditions in the north.
  • Autumn (Mar–May): Mild, settled weather, particularly throughout the southern states.
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): Cool to cold temperatures in the south, while the tropical north remains warm and dry.
  • Spring (Sep–Nov): Variable, warming through southern regions. Note: Australia's summer is December to February.

Visitors are advised to check regional forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology before travel.

Connectivity and Practical Matters

  • Australia uses 230 V / 50 Hz electricity with Type I plugs.
  • Mobile coverage is strong in cities and major towns and limited in remote and outback areas.
  • The currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD); card payments are widely accepted.
  • Driving is on the left-hand side of the road.
